The Canadian Stockbroker© | TCS newswire™: "America quoted from “THE REPUBLIC of EAST VANCOUVER” Issue #147 September 15 to 28, 2006

The American century draws to its close

Like all world-dominating empires before it, America has stopped growing. The rest is inevitable

By Dan Adleman

In the lead-up to the fifth anniversary of 9/11, George Bush went on vacation to his Crawford ranch, where, when he wasn’t playing cowboy, he apparently did a little light reading. One of the books we’re told he dusted off was Camus’ The Stranger, which The Daily Show’s John Stewart quickly pointed out is a story about an unreflective “westerner who kills an Arab for no good reason and dies with no remorse.” To a great many observers, this sounds like a fitting summary of not only the Bush legacy and America’s fate in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also what will become of Uncle Sam’s stature in the 21st century."

The new name and logo are the result of over a year of research, consulting and design work. Employees across the country were asked to define where they wanted the company to be and what they wanted it to stand for going forward. They wanted the new brand to reflect the new reality of the company: a successful independent investment dealer that continues to attract industry leaders and successful investors.

"Through targeted acquisition and recruiting initiatives, we pulled together a sizable company in a fairly short period of time," explained Stuart Raftus. "We are proud of the solid platform we have built to support both our private client and capital markets businesses. That said, over the past year or so, it became apparent that we had become more than the sum of our parts. We had become a new, united entity. We felt the time was right to put a new name to our investment dealer to more accurately represent the strong, independent, and entrepreneurial firm we have become-and the industry leader we aspire to be."

"As First Associates, we prided ourselves on placing clients' needs first," said Gerry Throop, President, Capital Markets. "As Blackmont, this commitment to clients will remain the cornerstone of our philosophy. Our management team and guiding principles have not changed. But we have grown as a company and needed a new brand to reflect our growing capabilities. Our new brand represents the company we have become and as Blackmont we will achieve our new, powerful ambition of setting the new benchmark for excellence within the industry."
